Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Senior Tax Accountant to lead all aspects of sales and use tax planning, compliance, and risk management for our multi-state manufacturing operations. This role requires deep expertise in manufacturing-specific tax regulations, complex transaction analysis, and proactive tax strategy development.
The ideal candidate will serve as the subject matter expert on sales and use tax matters, partnering closely with executive leadership, finance, procurement, and operations to ensure compliance while optimizing tax efficiency across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead all sales and use tax planning and compliance initiatives across multiple jurisdictions.
Develop and execute tax strategies related to manufacturing operations, including raw materials, capital equipment, machinery, tooling, R&D equipment, inventory movements, and intercompany transactions.
Evaluate tax implications of new facilities, expansions, equipment purchases, and operational changes.
Oversee exemption certificate management, resale documentation, and manufacturing-specific tax exemptions.
Provide strategic guidance during audits; lead audit defense and negotiations with state and local tax authorities.
Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen internal controls and minimize tax exposure.
Monitor legislative and regulatory changes impacting manufacturing sales and use tax.
Advise leadership on tax risk, exposure, and planning opportunities.
Mentor junior accounting staff as needed and serve as the internal authority on sales and use tax matters.
Qualifications:
Masters of Taxation - MST
7+ years of progressive experience in sales and use tax, with significant experience in a manufacturing environment.
Extensive knowledge of multi-state sales and use tax regulations, manufacturing exemptions, and audit defense.
Proven ability to manage complex transactions and provide strategic tax planning recommendations.
Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving capabilities.
Experience working cross-functionally within manufacturing operations.
Excellent leadership, communication, and presentation skills.
Preferred Experience:
Experience supporting multi-entity or multi-state manufacturing organizations.
Background in process improvement or ERP system implementation.
Experience with tax automation tools (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, or similar platforms).
