Position: Materials Engineer for Stacks

 

Status: Full-Time, Salaried

 

Reports to: Vice President of Research and Development

Position Summary: Materials Engineer for Stacks is responsible for designing and building electrode materials, electrode assemblies, cells, and stacks. You will also be responsible for developing new and existing materials for our cutting-edge electrolyzers.

Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position. Days and hours of the work are Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Design and develop electrodes and ion conductors for our electrolyzer technology

  • Assemble unified electrode assemblies and integrate them into full stacks

  • Conduct experiments to evaluate material properties, including chemical composition, crystal structure, and thermal stability

  • Screen commercial materials against established performance and durability criteria

  • Analyze and interpret data from experiments and simulations, and report results to internal and external stakeholders

  • Stay current with relevant research and technologies, and propose new ideas and approaches for material design and characterization

Professional Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience (post-educational degrees) designing and developing electrode assemblies above 25 cm2 in size

  • Built and operated low or high temperature electrolyzer or fuel cell stacks above 25 cm2 in size

  • Worked on solid oxide or other high temperature technologies at a major manufacturer of electrolyzer or fuel cell systems (preferred)

  • Strong knowledge of operating principles and conditions

  • Experience in synthesis, characterization, and testing of materials

  • Knowledge of material characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electron microscopy

  • Demonstrated successful analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Demonstrated strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams

  • Ability to work with unconventional materials and unorthodox methods, with proven results.

  • Ability to execute design of experiments (DOE) protocols with robust statistics-backed methods.
